Hi
Well it is Saturday and I am just about to head out to the movies with my wife. We are trying to decide between There Will Be Blood or Michael Clayton -- Jumpers is a long shot at this point. We have heard great things about all of them, though they are not too light hearted. I am learning towards Michael Clayton since I am a fan of George Clooney.
I had the opportunity to work with new clients in
For each and every group I meet with that wants to start their own school, I always share with them the fact that every established private school you see today had to start at one time with a kernel of a dream that needed the energy of a committed board. As they say, if you believe it, you can achieve it.
In today’s eNewsletter I am going to spend some time talking about your board and how to ensure that they will be motivated to make charitable donations to your school; be it new or established.
Enjoy the eNewsletter,

3. Getting Your Board Motivated to Fundraise
==================================
One of the biggest challenges a non-profit school faces is recruiting board members who are willing to make a considerable donation or find others in their community who will invest in your school. Based on my experience with many non-profit private schools, board members are hesitant to accept their responsibility to give and to solicit gifts for the school they serve. They need to understand that they are the role models upon which the rest of the school community looks at – if they do not think it is worthy to give then why should others? And it is true.
The problem starts right at the beginning when board members are recruited to a new or established non-profit private school. They need to understand right at the start the mission of the school and that EVERY board member must give to their personal level of pain. It is not only symbolic, but it is strategic. You need to recruit board members who are passionate about WHAT the school is about and are so motivated that they will give substantially to ensure that the school achieves its mission.
When you are recruiting board members, do not assume too much. Do the board members really understand the mission? Can they articulate it? Were board members properly informed about fundraising responsibilities when they were asked to serve on the board? Are they aware of the realities of fundraising? Your board committee who is responsible for finding and orienting board members needs to step up and be prepared with this dynamic. You get what you settle for, so do not settle for anything less.
When you are working with your new or existing directors make sure that they fully understand their responsibilities to give and to solicit gifts. You need to be clear that fundraising is an inside out process. That is, the burden starts with the board, staff, and volunteers. Only when these supporters have shown their support by giving 100% will other potential donors have the confidence to give to the organization. A practical objective is for insiders to give up to 20 percent of the final goal of the campaign. So now you see how important it is to recruit key board members.
For most new board members, unless they are very experienced with non-profits, they probably do not know these things. Almost everyone is uneasy about asking for money. The ones who make it look easy have come to grips with the need to do so and who have prepared. But successful fundraising campaigns focus gifts coming primarily from individuals.
Research shows that 85 percent of charitable donations come from individuals, not foundations or corporations. In addition, a small number of donors actually contribute the most money. Development professionals know this as the 90/10 rule. Ninety percent of the money from gifts will be from only 10 percent of donors.
Educating and preparing your board may be the most important task you perform when you begin a fundraising campaign.
