TESTIMONIAL
"HEG
is a very professional team that brings a myriad of talents to private
schools and are quite focused and results driven. They work efficiently
and are task-driven. As a start-up school we have so many items in our
punch-list to complete and Doug and the HEG team came in and helped us
with almost every aspect of the operations in a very short time frame.
They are flexible and a joy to work with. I would recommend them to any
group that wants to start a world-class international school or improve
the performance of your established private school."

Today's Article -
International Student Recruiting
Today, I wanted to talk to you
more about recruiting international students to your
school or district. I was reading an excellent online article entitled "Chinese Admissions Soar At
US High Schools", which noted that admissions of Chinese
students to US private high schools climbed dramatically over the last
five years, reaching 23,795 last year - up from 4,500 in 2008.
Collectively, enrollment from China, South Korea, India, Japan, Taiwan,
and Vietnam rose from 27,235 to 42,845; with China having the lion's
share.
When our firm works with schools to
assess their overall performance, one critical element of enhancing
enrollment (and revenue) is expanding their overall market of student
recruitment to include international students. We've always encouraged
schools to minimize their risk by diversifying the market they recruit
students from so that they're in a position to ride out any local
breakdown in enrollment. I was speaking with a school district this week
that had not taken advantage of the opportunity to recruit international
students. I shared that this strategy isn't just about the revenue that
international students bring in to support other programs for local
students, but it' also about the experience these new cultures bring to
your current students.
Today's article
shares more details about the in's-and-out's of developing an
international recruiting program for your school.
To your
success,
Doug Halladay

Are You
Missing Out On Recruiting International Students?
|
What
is an International Student Recruiting Program?
International Student
Recruiting Programs provide students the combination of an outstanding
education with the opportunity to live and travel in a new country. An
effective program promotes and markets your school as a destination for
students. This includes programs such as: one year or one-semester ESL
programs; High School graduation for fully integrated International
students; short-term programs; summer and winter programs; exchange
programs; extended travel programs, and; sister school programs.
Advantages
toyour School
An International Student
Recruiting Program enhances the overall educational value for your
current students, appreciation and understanding of other cultures, and
lifelong global friendships. In addition, the program provides a positive
revenue source from additional and high tuition, diversifies your
recruiting market, reduces the impact of regional economic cycles,
expands fundraising profile, and establishes exchange programs for your
students and staff.
What
makes an Effective International Student Recruiting Program?
There are a number of
factors inherent in an effective program. This includes: allowing
international students to choose from short- and long-term programs from
elementary through to secondary; promoting a flexible, accessible, and
internationally oriented program of education (e.g., ESL, AP, IB); highly
qualified and experienced ESL instructors; ensuring a quality learning
experience in a spectacular North American setting; fostering multiculturalism
and global perspective, and; assisting international students through a
variety of on-campus services and student support (e.g., medical,
counseling, travel arrangements, tutoring).
Where
Do You Start?
Most importantly, you need
to develop your vision and Mission for your program. Determine why you
want to start one? Is it for the revenue or the quality of programs and
culture it provides to your school? Or both. Either way, you need to
assess your current status -- perform an analysis of your school's
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and trends/threats (SWOT analysis);
perform a competitive analysis of your market,
and; identify where you are now and where you want to be. From this
process you develop goals and tasks to achieve your mission and vision,
noting how to overcome your weaknesses, utilizing your strengths, keeping
an eye on emerging trends and threats, and maximizing enrollment and
revenue. You need to develop key goals in relation to your plan,
establishing your action plan, and identifying the impact on other
programs at your school. But most importantly, create your implementation
plan, indicating who, when, how, and how much to achieve your vision.
Admissions/Marketing
Plan
One of the most critical
elements to a successful program is to development and implement an
effective international student marketing plan for recruitment. This is
more complicated than your "domestic plan." You are dealing
with another culture, language, norms, and distance. Nevertheless, an
effective plan should include: identifying short- and long-term markets;
developing a budget (10-15% of projected Gross Revenue); developing a
recruiting calendar for student/agent recruiting fairs and admissions
cycle; identifying promotional resources (e.g., web site, translated
promotional materials for fairs and agents, agent binders, resources for
fair booths, Home Stay Forms), and; building an agent database.
ESL
Program
The most critical element
of a successful International Program is the actual educational program
at your school. It's every institution's mission to provide learners a
quality learning experience. And word gets out very quickly, even
globally, about whether your program does what it says it does!!
Remember, the majority of a successful recruiting campaigns are still
based on word-of-mouth marketing. So ensure that you hire good
instructors and provide first-class instruction and resources, as well as
a healthy, happy living experience for your international students.
Special
Note
If you feel that this is
too good to be true, the international consultancy,
McKinsey believes that
interest in schools will continue in 2013, and not just in the US. The UK
has seen Chinese enrollment triple at its boarding schools in four years,
and the Independent Schools Council, which represents around 50% of the
UK's independent schools, says enrollment has risen from 2,330 to 3,630
since 2008. Singapore, Canada, and Australia are also thought to be
targets, where big investments in real estate and other assets can also
lead to permanent residency. "Private-business owners have an
opportunity to give themselves such options by making international
investments and acquisitions outside China," writes
McKinsey. "With permanent residence on offer...in return for an
investment of up to a few million dollars, many are taking
advantage."
