Why Get Accreditation?

Hi Inner Circle Member:

The other day I was looking at a new phone and wanted to find out what a major non-profit consumer organization thought about it. I was looking for an external stamp of approval.

What is your school’s or non-profit’s stamp of approval? Have you received an accreditation yet? You may be a new school that is knee deep in alligators and have not had time to take this time consuming step, but your are missing out on a lot.

Today I share a little more information on the why and how of accreditation.

3. Why Get Accreditation?

==================================

PURPOSE

Most founders when starting a school or when being scrutinized by parents seeking to enrol their child at your school, want to know if your school has been accredited and your teachers are certified. Your community is looking for an external agency that has looked at your school based on the highest level of standards to ensure that your programs meet a certain standards of educational quality and academic excellence.

However, receiving accreditation for your school goes beyond just receiving a stamp of approval. It helps your school build an image of excellence, integrity, and credibility.

Being accredited tells your community that your school has met established standards and that you are serious about your mission. It validates your programs and progress in a range of important areas, including curriculum, facilities, management, staffing, and more.

WHAT IS ACCREDITATION

The word accredit is a related to the same root word as credible or believable. An accredited institution is one that can be believed. It has earned the approval of those who know it. Accreditation means: “This institution is fulfilling its stated purpose with integrity and excellence.”

Accreditation confirms the strengths and quality of your programs, facilities, and staff, examining how well your school lives up to your mission.

ACCREDITATION PROCEDURE

Professional organizations provide accreditation criteria for their members. Surgeons are approved by other surgeons. Lawyers are approved by other lawyers. Educators by other educators. Evaluation and accreditation of a private school must be made by professional peers, and is based on integrity and excellence.

Most private schools initially receive their license or charter from the jurisdiction they are located in. This is the first step. They have met the standards for starting and operating a school their jurisdiction. It primary involves curriculum and teaching staff.

However, just because a school claims membership, does not mean that it is accredited. Many schools claim to be 'accredited' when in really they are not. Yes, they have received authorization from their province or state they reside in, but they have not received an evaluation from an accrediting organization.

Of course, accreditation is not a one-off process. It has to be maintained. Your school has to be able to show evidence during an inspection process that it has maintained and grown, not just maintained the status quo. Normally the period of review is every 5 years.

ACCREDITATION ORGANIZATIONS

There are a variety of provincial, state, national, and federal accreditation agencies. You need to determine which suits your school best, in terms of your programs, location, costs, and maturity. For example, if may be more beneficial to be accredited by a regional association first, since it better matches your local standards, and your current and future parents will recognize it. As your school matures, you may seek more universal standards. Here are a few organizations:

Canadian Educational Standards Institute (CESI)

The Mission of the Canadian Educational Standards Institute is to promote educational excellence through a rigorous school accreditation process. CESI has developed rigorous educational and operational standards and evaluates the performance of member schools in meeting those standards in the fulfillment of their missions.

New England Association of Schools & Colleges, Inc. (NEASC)

Founded in 1885, NEASC is the nation’s oldest regional accrediting association whose mission is the establishment and maintenance of high standards for all levels of education, from Pre-K to the doctoral level. NEASC serves more than 2,000 public and independent schools, colleges and universities in the six states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont and American/international schools in more than seventy nations worldwide.

Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC)

WASC is one of 6 regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. The Western region covers institutions in California and Hawaii, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, the Pacific Basin, and East Asia, and areas of the Pacific and East Asia where American/International schools or colleges may apply to it for service.

Advanced Placement and the International Baccalaureate Program...Which is Right For Your School?

As a long-time Vancouverite, we are now embracing our winter weather (read rain). Our tans now shift to rust. Of course the good news is that our Canuck’s hockey season will begin its season tomorrow, and at this point we are undefeated. ;-)

Like you, our kids are back into their school routine, which really means that their parents are back into the routine of connecting them to their school and after-school routines. But it’s worth it. I just don’t remember my parents ever driving me to my clubs and teams.

Today I am going to reflect on two comprehensive education programs that are becoming more popular in private schools, Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IBO) program. 3. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IBO)

==================================

I have had the experience of both developing about 20% of the province of British Columbia’s K-12 curriculum as well as working with AP and IBO curriculum. Both the AP and IBO curriculum offer outstanding learning experiences for your students, clear templates for your teachers, both are very rigorous, add instant credibility to your school, and university recognition.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT

The AP class-work and exams are overseen by the College Board and include 35 courses and are available to capable students in Grades 10-12. The course-work ends with challenging exams in May of their graduating year. High scores on the exam can result in credit for corresponding first year university courses. It is coordinated out of New Jersey, USA, and is mostly popular in the North America (about 500,000 students).

The benefit of the AP program is that your school has the flexibility to use 1 or more of the AP courses; you don’t have to lock into the entire program like IBO expects. Hence, if you have a gifted group of students in math, you can offer AP Calculus. It is both a great selling point for your school’s enriched programs as well as challenging your serious students. Similar to IB, AP can also offers an Advanced Placement International Diploma (APID).

International Baccalaureate (IB) Program

The IB curriculum is coordinated out of Geneva, Switzerland, and offers 3 programs for students aged 3 to 18 (Gr. 12). The IB program includes:

  • Primary Years Program (PYP): Aged 3-12
  • Middle Years Program (MYP): Aged 11-16
  • Diploma Program (DP): +17-18

The great thing about IB is that it is a complete, sequential philosophy and program, including: instruction, assessment, learning outcomes, resources, professional development, testing, and more. And of course it too has university recognition in +110 countries.

I have to tell that this is an outstanding curriculum based on sound instruction and excellence. You have a complete scope and sequence for your entire school’s educational program, along with staff training, credibility, and universal acceptance.

Generally speaking, it can be an expensive program to implement. Additionally, as you progress towards the Diploma Program, the academic demands on students and your school’s resources increases. Hence, you must have an extremely capable group of students to take the program. That is why some schools offer IB as a school-within-a-school. You have a mainstream and IB stream of programs.

Both programs have their advantages. Your decision to use either should not be taken lightly. Both have costs and demands on your staff, resources, and students. I recommend that you visit both web sites, set up appointments to visit schools that offer both programs, and then make a list of the pro’s and con’s and determine which is a better fit for your school.

3. What Is Your Organization’s Long-Term Impact?

What is your legacy? What will you leave behind when it is all done? Whew, now I know that seems pretty heavy, but when you look at the school or non-profit you want to start, or manage/lead more effectively, what long-term purpose does it fulfill in your community? What would be missing if you did not exist?

How you like to reach an estimated 990,000 children by building 197 schools, establishing over 2,900 libraries, publishing 77 new local language children's titles representing over 700,000 books, donating over 1.2 million English language children's books, establishing 92 computer and language labs, and funding more than 2,000 long-term girls' scholarships. All since 2000!!

Well it can be done, and it has been by Room To Read’s founder and CEO, John Wood.

How did it happen? Well sometimes a request for a single book can literally spark the creation of thousands of libraries and schools around the world. Such is the case with Room to Read. In approximately 6 years, Room to Read has created a network of over 3,000 schools and libraries in rural communities in Asia and Africa. The award-winning organization is considered one of the most effective and fastest growing non-profits in this day and age.

John Wood quit his senior executive position with Microsoft to launch Room to Read after a trek through Nepal changed his life. John sought to weave proven corporate business practices with his inspiring vision to provide educational access to 10 million children in the developing world. His novel approach to non-profit management called for scalable, measured, sustainable results, low-overhead, challenge grants fostering community ownership and sustainability as well as strong local staff and partnerships.
