How Do You Inspire Values?

Hi Inner Circle Member:

Stop the presses, we’ve had 2 days of sunny weather here in Vancouver. If only we could combine that with a Canuck’s hockey team winning a few games.

However, all is not bad. I was just in Honolulu recently and enjoyed their +80 F sunshine. I love to get up early there and go for a long walk along the beach before the rest of civilization wakes up.

While in Honolulu, I had a chance to visit several of their great private schools: Punahou, Mid-Pac, and Iolani. You may or may not know that Hawai’i has the highest percentage of students enrolled in private schools per capita in the USA. One of the reasons is that they have amazing private schools. One commonality that I noted all the schools I visited had was an overriding emphasis on values in their curriculum.

Does your school do that? Today I’ll talk a little more about this concept.

3. How Do You Inspire Values In Your Educational Program?

==================================

While in Honolulu recently, I had the opportunity to visit several of their great private schools: Punahou, Mid-Pac, and Iolani. You may or may not know that the state of Hawai’i has the highest percentage of students enrolled in private schools per capita in the USA (and Punahou the largest at 3,500!). One of the reasons is that they have amazing private schools.

One commonality I noted that the schools had was an overriding emphasis and integration of values into the curriculum. They not only “talked the talk” of the importance of values in the educational program, but they also “walked the walk.”

Punahou formed their own Luke Center, which embraces both community service and service learning. Their community service involves the traditional volunteering and philanthropy. However, their service learning program involves thoughtfully organized services linked directly within their curriculum. Throughout all of their service learning efforts, the Luke Center focused on:

* To support and enhance student development in social responsibility;

* To promote the connections between service, spirituality and character education;

* To develop interdependence and a sense of community;

* To create meaningful links between service and the curriculum; and

* To meet community needs and take an active role in Punahou's vision of a private school serving a public purpose.

They not only felt that they wanted their students to be better people and citizens, but they also took the next step and invested in this vision by developing a center to coordinate the efforts and developed a sequential project-based curriculum from K to 12 to allow students to demonstrate the values in a learning experience.

I have to tell you it is very inspiring what they are doing. If you would like to see an example of their Grade 5 service learning program on caring and compassion, click on the following link:
